One of Deadwood’s rowdiest residents, Calamity Jane is a hot-tempered drunk who is known for her habit of dressing as a man. Few would describe her as reliable, and they certainly wouldn’t put her in charge of their well-being. But that’s exactly what happens when a deadly smallpox outbreak sweeps through town. Because Calamity Jane contracted smallpox as a child, she is immune to the disease, and she volunteers to work alongside the town doctor to save the lives of the infected citizens who once treated her with such contempt. Years later, one of the patients she nursed back to health seeks out gunfighter-turned-newspaperman Bat Masterson to share her memories of the Calamity Jane that few people ever knew.
