The Spirit of Truth

When a traveler in his wagon train is murdered, Jim Bridger uses his gift for storytelling to flush out the killer. While the men go about digging a grave for the victim, Bridger begins to tell them about the horrible fate of a murderer he knew years before. In the tale, Bridger is trapping with two companions, when they are surprised by a Crow war party. After the men scatter, one of them uses the confusion that follows to secretly murder his rival and blame it on the Crow. But the murderer is soon seized with a mysterious affliction, and Bridger watches helplessly as he descends into madness and takes his own life by jumping off a cliff. One of the men from the wagon train is struggling with his own guilty conscience, and Bridger’s shocking tale leads him to confess to the murder.
