John Wayne is the biggest Western legend of all time. In a world where everything is up for discussion, it can hardly be debated that “The Duke” was the most famous Western actor in history.

But how did it all end? What was his last role?

It came in 1976 with him playing John Bernard (J.B.) Books in The Shootist, which was a fitting and poignant ending to his iconic career.

The plot revolves around Wayne, who plays an aging gunfighter who learns he’s dying of cancer. He decided that he would not continue his life sick and helpless, so he chose to die on his own terms, in one final gunfight.

Wayne himself was battling cancer during the filming of the movie. He had survived lung cancer in the 1960s, but he was in a weakened state, and his declining health gave the role an authenticity that connected deeply with the audience.

“This is as close to me as I’m ever going to get to playing myself,” Wayne told friends at the time.

The film featured an impressive supporting cast, too, with Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, Jimmy Stewart, Richard Boone, and John Carradine all playing key roles. Unlike any of Wayne’s earlier Westerns, The Shootist was a quieter, more reflective film about aging, legacy, and the fearlessness of facing death with dignity.

Wayne made a few television appearances after The Shootist was released, and even voiced a character in Star Wars in 1977 – in which he was uncredited – but this was his last motion picture before he died June 11, 1979, at age 72.
