Showdown: Audie Murphy, Kathleen Crowley & Charles Drake

Starring Audie Murphy, Kathleen Crowley, and Charles Drake! This gripping Western was filmed in black and white (which infuriated Audie Murphy) to great effect. It was shot on location against the backdrop of the Alabama Hills and Lone Pine.

The Mexican border town of Adone is a tiny place with some big quirks. For instance, it’s in the middle of nowhere and it doesn’t have a jail. But what it does have is a post where criminals are shackled in the middle of the town square.

This is exactly what happens to friends Chris Foster and Bert Pickett when they get into a barroom brawl after a card game goes wrong. Now, the pair are both stuck there with an iron collar around their necks.

Which is bad enough, but then other, worse criminals are also chained to the post. Among them is a violent outlaw named Lavalle and his gang. Lavalle doesn’t intend to stay put, so he makes his men dig out the post – and soon all of the men break free and run for the hills.

With $12,000 in stolen securities in their pockets, Chris and Bert try to escape…but Lavalle and his men catch them. Now, the gang holds Chris hostage while they send Bert to convert the securities to cash. If Bert doesn’t come back, they promise to kill Chris.

But instead of bringing back the cash, Bert hands it off to his ex-girlfriend, a dance hall girl named Estelle. When he returns empty-handed, Lavalle is furious. So, Lavalle sends Chris off in search of Estelle, and demands that he better come back – or Bert will die!

Now, Chris could just run for his life, but he’s not that kind of man. He’s decent, honest, and he knows what he has to do. First, he’d better track down Estelle; second, get her to hand the money over to him; and third, get back in time to save Bert’s life. Of course, Lavalle will honor his promise and let them go…right?

If only everything was that simple….
