Captain Wilton Parmenter comes from a long line of brave, prominent Army officers. While he’s not lacking in courage and chivalry, he’s pretty much a klutz—a clumsy, bumbling, incompetent soldier. When, as a private, his sneezing fit accidentally initiates the final cavalry charge of the Civil War at Appomattox, he’s lauded a hero, awarded the Medal of Honor, and “promoted” to Captain of Fort Courage, F Troop, a remote outpost in a sparsely populated area of Kansas—where the Army’s “least useful” soldiers and misfits are stationed. By-the-book, but naïve, Parmenter has his work cut out for him. Of his three predecessors, two deserted, and one had a nervous breakdown!

Under his command are likeable but scheming Sgt. Morgan O’Rourke and Cpl. Randolph Agarn. O’Rourke has several side-hustles going, all illicit businesses, most utter failures, and Agarn is in the thick of it. They’re both in cahoots with the Hekawis Indians, whose Chief Wild Eagle calls Parmenter “The Great White Pigeon.” They often stage fake battles to keep people from discovering their friendship and underhanded trades.

O’Rourke’s and Agarn’s wheeling and dealing, and not-quite-above-board business ploys go right over Parmenter’s head. Though they take full advantage of their gullible commander’s cluelessness, they’re protective of him.

Besides his staff, the shy and socially awkward Parmenter has another big problem—his girlfriend, Jane Angelica Thrift known to all as “Wrangler Jane,” the postmistress, shopkeeper, and sharpshooter! She’s a woman with a big heart and marriage on her mind, and she has her eyes zeroed in on Parmenter, whether he likes it or not.

Hilarious characters along with physical comedy, slapstick, and running gags (Keep your eye on the fort’s watchtower!), F Troop is a lighthearted, over-the-top wild romp in the Wild West.
