Conagher (1991)

This movie has something for everyone: Shootouts, Indian attacks, cattle rustling, revenge, and a touch of true love! And when the stars, Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross, are real-life husband and wife, the romantic story takes on an even deeper meaning.

Widow, Evie Teale opens her home as a stagecoach rest stop. One day, a man traveling on the coach warns Evie to beware a man called Conn Conagher, a notorious gunslinger, who might be passing through. In truth, Conagher is a rough cowboy trying to scrape together a living on the frontier. Indeed, he’s a gunfighter, but most of all, he’s a loner and confirmed bachelor. He’s looking for ranch work when he stops at Evie’s home. No doubt Conagher is attracted to Evie, not only by her beauty, but her independence, her grit—not to mention good cooking. The two tread cautiously toward love. But before he can settle down, Conagher must fight, one more time, against a band of brutal cattle rustlers.

Why We Like It: “You can’t beat seeing gritty Sam Elliott showing his determination and real cowboy character as he embraces a widow and kids, while fighting to defend their ranch.”
