The Cowboys (1972)

John Wayne stars in this classic and beloved Western with Bruce Dern, Colleen Dewhurst, Robert Carradine, and Slim Pickens.

Just as Montana rancher, Wil Anderson is preparing for a 400-mile cattle drive, his veteran crew of dependable cowboys quits to go dig for gold. Out of options, Anderson recruits a group of greenhorn schoolboys and tests their cowboy skills, which are sorely lacking. Though he has misgivings, he hires the kids. With the addition of Jeb Nightlinger, a camp cook, the trail team is complete. Now, all Anderson has to do is turn these naïve schoolboys into wizened cowboys. In his gruff, tough-love style, he teaches the boys to rope, brand and herd cattle and horses—and they excel. Soon Anderson learns that training the boys and keeping them in line are the least of his problems. A band of ruthless rustlers plan an attack, doing whatever is necessary to steal the herd, even killing Anderson and the boys.

Why We Like It: “Nothing says ‘cowboy’ like a John Wayne movie!”
