Filmed in Death Valley and Utah in glorious Technicolor, this film was one of Joel McCrea’s personal favorites!
Chester Graham Jr. is the spoiled, lazy son of a railroad magnate. As father and son travel West toward Santa Fe by train, Chester Jr. overhears that he’s about to be sent to boarding school, so gets off the train during a water stop and wanders into the desert hills. He soon regrets this, the latest of his attention-seeking stunts, as he becomes lost and disoriented. When cowboy Dan Matthews comes upon the distraught lad, Chester demands he take him to Santa Fe to reunite with his father’s train. Dan is leading a cattle drive that way, and reluctantly agrees to let Chester join up, on one condition: that he earn his keep. Chester must do something he’s never done—work. Santa Fe is a long way off, and it’s up to Dan to make the selfish, arrogant young man into a hardworking, respectful, and ethical cowboy.
Why We Like It: “McCrea and Stockwell have some really great moments and they make the movie very believable. Enjoyable movie!”
