With a twinkle in his eye and a heart full of grit, James Garner charmed audiences for over six decades. Whether playing a fast-talking gambler in Maverick, a reluctant sheriff in Support Your Local Sheriff, or the lovable private eye in The Rockford Files, Garner brought warmth, wit, and authenticity to every role.
Born April 7, 1928, in Norman, Oklahoma, James Scott Bumgarner grew up during the Great Depression. Life wasn’t easy—his mother passed away when he was just four, and he and his brothers were separated and sent to live with relatives. Reunited years later, Garner’s resilience carried him through a tough childhood, military service in the Korean War (where he earned two Purple Hearts), and eventually, a path to stardom.
Garner’s acting career began almost by accident, with a non-speaking role in a Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. Inspired by watching Henry Fonda perform, he studied the craft and soon found himself on television. In 1957, he landed the role of Bret Maverick, a charming cardsharp who won over viewers with his laid-back style and clever wit.
His film career flourished with hits like The Great Escape, Move Over Darling, and Murphy’s Romance, which earned him an Oscar nomination. But it was his portrayal of Jim Rockford—a private investigator with a knack for getting into trouble—that cemented his place in television history. The Rockford Files ran from 1974 to 1980 and remains one of the most beloved detective series of all time.
Garner’s Westerns, including Duel at Diablo, Hour of the Gun, and Support Your Local Gunfighter, showcased his versatility, blending humor, action, and heart. Off-screen, he was a devoted husband to Lois Clarke, whom he married just 14 days after meeting, and a loving father to daughters Kim and Gigi.
James Garner passed away on July 19, 2014, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most genuine stars. Explore his life through photos, a timeline, and exclusive features that celebrate the man behind the charm.
