In this classic, Charlton Heston plays Will Penny, an aging cowboy who takes a winter job as a line rider on a large cattle ranch in the mountains. When he arrives at the remote cabin he’s to live in, he discovers Catherine and her young son, Horace, already making the place their home. As his job requires, he orders them to leave, but when he rides out to work, he’s attacked and left for dead by a vengeful gang he’d previously scuffled with. As winter rages, Catherine nurses Will back to health, they fall in love, and Will becomes a father figure to Horace. But trouble is not far for this unlikely “family,” and soon Will, a wanderer and a loner his whole life, must decide if it’s too late to settle down.
Why We Like It: “Heston’s portrayal of a cowboy was spot on: common, direct, and honest. His character represented brilliantly the principles of the old West.”
