About
A smooth-talking gambler on the trail of tournament money scrambles through a series of comic setbacks, scams, and double-crosses—all while trying to stay one step ahead of danger and one hand ahead in the game. His biggest challenge, however, might be a clever, alluring thief whose motives are as unpredictable as the cards in the deck. Their uneasy alliance leads them through stagecoach mishaps, con-artist feuds, riverboat bluffs, and a poker table full of sharks, each trying to outwit the other on the way to a massive payday.
Front-and-center in this comedic Western adventure is Mel Gibson as Bret Maverick, joined by Jodie Foster as the cunning Annabelle Bransford and James Garner as Marshal Zane Cooper. The supporting cast features Graham Greene, Alfred Molina, James Coburn, and a long list of Western icons and country music cameo appearances that give the film its playful, genre-celebrating charm. With witty writing, sharp timing, and charismatic performances, the story blends comedy, adventure, and gambling tension into a lively crowd-pleasing ride.
