Geronimo: An American Legend (1993) Robert Duvall, Wes Studi, Gene Hackman, and Matt Damon star in this compelling Western that is sweeping, grand, and filled with gorgeous Western scenery. It also introduces us to Geronimo…and the story of the Apache people and their fight to stay free. Although not happy about it, Geronimo and his fellow Apache agree to live on a reservation and become corn farmers. However, many of the Apache struggle with farming and miss their old ways and traditions. Geronimo, a respected healer, tries to live quietly on the reservation, but he grows angry as he sees the American government continually break their promises to his tribe. All of that is nothing compared to what happens next. When Geronimo learns that a holy man and some of his fellow Apache were killed for practicing their faith, he rounds up a band of warriors and forms a ragtag militia that goes on the attack. He embarrasses the U.S. Cavalry with rounds of successful guerilla warfare and refuses to surrender. Now, Lieutenant Charles Gatewood, along with Indian fighter Al Sieber and young calvary man Britton Davis, are dispatched to find Geronimo and bring him in. Their superior, Brigadier General Crook, recognizes Geronimo’s abilities and strengths and despises his government’s cruelty and double-dealing. He also openly admires Geronimo’s determination and bravery. Since Geronimo is outnumbered and sees Crook and Gatewood as sympathetic to his plight, he eventually surrenders to Crook. But when nothing changes for the Apache, Geronimo escapes once more along with large numbers of his men—and Crook resigns in disgrace. He is replaced by General Nelson A. Miles, a tough and unrelenting man determined to get rid of Geronimo. However, he quickly learns that capturing Geronimo is nearly impossible. So, he formulates a plan: he asks Lieutenant Gatewood to reach out to Geronimo and lead him in voluntarily with a sweet deal that would result in his freedom. Now, the principled Lieutenant has a problem. He knows that Geronimo is too smart to fall for this plan, but Gatewood must still follow his orders. A long road lies ahead, filled with mortal danger, broken promises, and dashed dreams. Will Lieutenant Gatewood remain true to his values and ideals—or will he do whatever it takes to bring down the mighty Geronimo? You may also like...
