    Pop Culture

INSP: To what extent do you believe entertainment really shapes our thoughts and affects us, specifically young people, with a particular view of humanity based on the shows we watch?

Earl Hamner: I think it can. I have to think about that.

In extension of what I was just saying, a continual image of immature, dopey, callow people, I think is damaging. People lose faith in their own ability when they see that kind of image projected over and over.

Like last night, on one of the local public television stations here, there was an old Frank Sinatra concert. And he was a consummate artist; he had respect for his work and for himself.

I know he was a showbiz personality, but yet he – the image of himself he projected was of somebody who loved his song, who loved people, who celebrated the inherent beauty of being alive. It was a really inspiring.

I think it was an hour and a half I sat there and listened to the whole thing. My wife and I sat and watched together this whole celebration of music and affirmation.

And then, this morning on the Today Show I tuned in and there was a group, a musical group, and I think it was called The Five Morons.

And when they sang it wasn’t real singing, it was a scream. The lead singer screamed his way through lyrics that were unintelligible. And you know, I liked Elvis Presley, old Elvis rolled around on the stage and he was fun, but this was a sort of writhing, twisting, gyrations.

As I watched it, I thought, Sinatra spoke of a gentler kinder world.

This young person – who didn’t look more than nineteen or twenty – maybe speaks for today’s society. Maybe he finds it unintelligible; the only way he can be heard is to scream. The only way to attract attention is with excessive sexual innuendo.

I’m not a prude, I just – these are just observations from the contrast between watching Sinatra, which gave me great pleasure, and the horror of watching something called Five Morons this morning.

And also, the crowds were so thick that they extended – you know Rockefeller Center is there at 49th and 5th, and they extended for blocks back to 39th street. Literally multitudes of people watching this, this –

I can’t even call it entertainment – a circus, an ugly circus.

INSP: Do you think there’s something about John-Boy, or the Walton family, that connects with people, even those people outside the Rockefeller Center, with wholesome values? People want wholesome values, but what are those? What is wholesome?

Earl Hamner: What is wholesome to me is the ten commandments; to do unto others as you would do unto yourself; to believe in something beyond your own self; self-respect, love for your fellow man – you know, a healthy mind and a healthy body. (Laughs) I don’t know – these are things I respect.

As a person, in experience, several different ways – “To thine own self be true,” all of those things that sound like platitudes.

But the reason that they are repeated over and over is because there’s strength in them; they’re lessons to live by.(Chuckles) I sound like a Baptist preacher, don’t I?

INSP: (Laughs) Well that’s good; I’ve been in a Baptist church for a while!

And I think there is that search, even in that crowd at Rockefeller Center that you were describing.

Earl Hamner: And I think they’re all searching.

    Relevant! After 40 Years…

INSP: In October of 2010 INSP brought The Waltons back to television after a couple of years off the air. New generations are falling in love with The Waltons and I wonder, why do you think people connect with the show as much now as they did when it was on back in the 70s?

Earl Hamner: Back in the 70s there was a great deal of turmoil in the world, a great deal of uncertainty. And a lot of institutions were being questioned, and people felt vaguely uneasy. I think that climate exists today.

There’s discord in the country; there’s a lot of division between the rich and the poor, a lot of division in the political parties. We’re at war. It’s a time of great anxiety as it was in the 70s.

I think in those times people look for support, they look for affirmative entertainment, and they look for affirmation of the traditional values. Our country has a substantial sense of values.

I receive a great many letters from – I hate to call them fans, because fans sounds like some group of people who sort of set out just to get your autograph. These are people. These are genuine citizens, actually, not just of our country but from all over the world.

I just had two letters today – one was from South Africa and another was from the Ukraine – asking for a personally autographed photo of me, laughable.

But it’s the climate that is the genesis for a great deal of the interest in The Waltons. I think that one thing I can gather from the fan mail is that people see the series either in terms of what their life has been like, or is like. Or, the way they wish it could be; the loving family, the support of the community, interesting people, people who love each other, decent people, and good citizens.

Sometimes I get letters from people who say, “I watched your show last night, and that was a wonderful lesson you taught us.” And I thought, when this first happened, what lesson were they talking about, I was just writing a story.

But when that happened over and over again, it came to me that people were drawing lessons, and that it was not me setting out to teach. But there were lessons inherent in the way of life that The Waltons led; the strong characters, and the support they gave each other, and the climate they created in which young people could grow into valuable and meaningful lives.

INSP: What are some of the themes in television (and culture in general) that you think are different today – that cause people to wonder “What’s wrong with this society?”

Earl Hamner: The images that we send forth are so negative. And I hate to say it, our television, most television – certainly not of INSP – the images of people, of men and women, of children, everything, are so negative.

They are pictured – and I’m ashamed of television for projecting that image of rudeness, grossness, lack of manners – I know we, constitutionally, have the right to free speech, but sometimes I think that goes too far in the grossness of the expression, and the image of man.

I think in the earlier years in television we elevated the taste of people – we taught, without trying to teach, that we have some ability to be noble, to be worthwhile.

Today I don’t see those images.

People are pictured as sick on the medical shows; or as criminals on all those police shows; or as idiots on most of those reality shows. You turn on a television show and see somebody there simply because they are losing weight – I have to turn it off.

I think the image of mankind that is projected is a very damaging one to our society.

One day Tom, running from his drunken father, slides unnoticed under the guarded gates and onto the grounds of the royal palace. He is met there by Prince Edward, who discreetly leads him through a side entrance and up to his stately room.

The two boys become fast friends, sharing their dreams and, in a purely whimsical act, exchange clothes. They stand in front of a mirror and are truly amazed … they cannot tell each other apart.

Other than the smudge of dirt on his face, Tom looks exactly like the Prince did before they exchanged clothes and the Prince looks like Tom would have had he never gone out to play!

In a moment of carpe diem, the Prince heads for an open window. “Let us enjoy this opportunity,” Prince Edward announces. “You are the Prince until I return.”

The Prince is thrust into the street and immediately forced into a slum life, including hunger, John Canty’s wrath, and improper imprisonment for a crime he did not commit.

Tom encounters bars of a different kind. The gates around the palace serve as jail to a young boy whose every movement is choreographed, observed, and judged.

Will the Prince overcome John Canty’s wrath and the skepticism of those who label him a liar when he professes his true identity?

When the king dies will Tom be able to continue his masquerade as Prince, while fending off the nefarious Lord Hertford?

The final chapter of the “Little House” saga.

Starring Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert, Karen Grassle, Dean Butler, Victor French

The citizens of Walnut Grove learn that land swindlers are about to take over the town. Without legal grounds to fight, the citizens decide that while the swindlers can have the land, they can’t have the town that’s on it!

Charles and Caroline Ingalls decide to celebrate his first vacation in two years, since taking his job in the big city, by paying a visit to Laura, Almanzo and granddaughter Rose in Walnut Grove.

On the train Charles accidentally steps into a luxury parlor car occupied by Nathan Lassiter and his henchman. The land baron is cordial, but immediately dismisses Charles to attend to the business at hand: he’s recently acquired the rights to the Mesabi iron range in Minnesota.

While he owns the land, there are several towns in the area that pose a problem. So, Lassiter sends his henchman ahead to Walnut Grove to scope out the town before going there himself to spring his surprise and claim all rights to the land underneath.

Once Lassiter arrives in town he promptly visits the Sunday church service and demonstrates his ownership of every square inch of dirt under Walnut Grove, announcing that with a U.S. Army regiment to back him up he’ll evict everyone who doesn’t go to work for him.

Laura expresses her frustration by smashing all the windows of her house so that Lassiter can’t get to them. This gives another town resident, who already works for the iron mines, an idea – Lassiter can have the land under Walnut Grove, but he won’t get one useful stick of the city.

Don’t miss this explosive, emotional finale to the Little House on the Prairie series.

“America’s Christian Heritage” is an original one-hour Inspiration Networks special focusing on the Christian history of the founding of our nation and the progression of those early attitudes and institutions. America was founded as a Christian nation by Christian men and women fleeing religious persecution in their homelands.

The earliest principles of democracy and freedom in America were based on the laws of God and the teachings of the Bible. Our systems of legislation and jurisprudence depended on the guidance of Almighty God, and our early leaders were vocal in their adherence to the Christian faith in matters of government.

“America’s Christian Heritage,” hosted by Janet Parshall, was shot on location in Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia. Feature segments include: the history of the Supreme Court; early Presidents; the Pledge of Allegiance; our founding Patriots; and the Constitutional Convention are just a few of the topics explored in depth.

The myth of Separation of Church and State is carefully explained, and some of America’s most renowned public figures, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., are featured.

    Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington

    Academy Award® winner Morgan Freeman

With Matthew Broderick, Andre Braugher, and Cary Elwes

Winner of three Academy Awards®, Glory is the story of the Union Army’s first black fighting unit in the American Civil War. The 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was made up of black soldiers–some Northern freemen, some escaped slaves–and led by whites, including Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of Boston abolitionists.

The unit faced virulent racism, not only from their Southern adversaries but from Northern whites who resisted arming black soldiers and doubted their ability to fight effectively. But in the bloody attack on Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina, the members of the 54th distinguished themselves in an almost suicidal battle.

Their heroic actions helped throw open the gates of the Union Army to 180,000 blacks who risked their lives for emancipation and citizenship, and may have helped turn the tide of the war.

Starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Stefanie Powers

George Washington McLintock, “GW” to friends and foes alike, is a cattle baron and the richest man in the territory. He anxiously awaits the return of his daughter Becky, who has been away at school for the last two years.

He’s also surprised to see that his wife Katherine has returned. She had left him some years before without really explaining what he had done, but she does make the point of saying that she’s returned to take their daughter back to the State Capitol with her.

“GW” is highly respected by everyone around him, including the farmers who are pouring into the territories with free grants of land – and the Indians, who are under threat of being relocated to another reservation.

Things take an uproarious turn for the “worst” when “GW” faces off, not only with his hot-tempered wife, but with his daughter and her suitors; homesteaders and cattlemen; and the government over land disputes with the local Comanche.

Between his wife, his headstrong daughter, the crooked land agent and the thieving government Indian agent, “GW” tries to keep the peace and do what is best for everyone.

    Starring:

James Cagney, Walter Huston, and Joan Leslie

This movie biography was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, and was the platform for James Cagney to dance and sing his way to a well-deserved Academy Award for his outstanding portrayal of Vaudeville composer and performer George M. Cohan.

    Academy Awards, 1943
Won: James Cagney – Oscar, Best Actor in a Leading Role

Won: Nathan Levinson (Warner Bros. SSD) – Oscar, Best Sound, Recording

Won: Ray Heindorf, Heinz Roemheld – Oscar, Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture

    Nominated – Oscar, Best Picture

Nominated: Walter Huston – Oscar, Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Nominated: Michael Curtiz – Oscar, Best Director

Nominated: George Amy – Oscar, Best Film Editing

Nominated: Robert Buckner, Edmund Joseph – Oscar, Best Writing, Original Story

    The Story:
In the early days of WW II, Cohan comes out of retirement to star as US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a show titled “I’d Rather Be Right.”

On opening night he’s summoned to meet the President at the White House, where Cohan is presented with a Congressional Gold Medal (in fact, this happened several years previously). Cohan is overcome, and as he chats with Roosevelt he recalls his early days…
The film flashes back to Cohan’s birth on July 4 – while his father is performing on the Vaudeville stage.

Cohan and his sister join the family act as soon as they can learn to dance, and soon “The Four Cohans” are performing successfully. But George gets a bit cocky as he grows, and is eventually blacklisted by theatrical producers for being troublesome. He leaves the act and hawks his songs around unsuccessfully to producers.

In partnership with another struggling writer, Sam Harris, he finally interests a producer and they are on the road to success. During this time he meets and is married to Mary, a young singer/dancer.

As his star ascends, he persuades his now struggling parents to join his act, eventually vesting some of his valuable theatrical properties in their name. Cohan retires, but returns to the stage several times, culminating in the role that lands him in the presence of President Roosevelt.

As he leaves the White House, Cohan performs a dance step down the stairs (which Cagney thought up before the scene was filmed and performed with no rehearsal). Outside, he joins a military parade, where the soldiers are singing ‘Over There’. Not knowing that he’s the composer, they jokingly invite Cohan to join in, which he does.

    Mary Ellen Walton gets married!

On Waltons Mountain our family ties were strengthened by hardship. The walls of our house protected us from wind and weather, and we managed somehow to survive grief, and illness, and disappointment. Who then could have believed we would find ourselves so defenseless against romance.

Mary Ellen and David Spencer, a young intern at Rockfish Hospital, quite unexpectedly announce they are getting married…the children are excited and Grandpa to shouts, ‘Whoopee!’

Later, during an engagement party, Dr. Curtis Willard pulls into the driveway and announces he’ll be the new doctor on Walton’s Mountain! He saw the need in The Blue Ridge Chronicle and jumped at the chance to start his own practice.

After convincing the committee (John-Boy, John, and Reverend Fordwick) that he has the cash for the down payment on Dr. Vance’s office and they hire him, Curt immediately gets off on the wrong foot!

When he realizes he needs help “sweet-talking” his patients, Curt asks Mary Ellen to help him at the office, and right away puts his foot into his mouth by telling Mary Ellen she’ll start by straightening out Dr. Vance’s “cock-eyed” filing system – Mary Ellen promptly informs him she organized the system!

Toward the end of the “Hard Luck Dance” fundraiser Curt asks Mary Ellen for one last dance. She hesitates, afraid of what people may say. “There’s nothing for people to talk about,” Curt says. Unless she feels the ‘chemistry’ that he feels. Curt kisses her as Erin watches from the bushes.

During the wedding rehearsal at the church Reverend Fordwick asks Mary Ellen if she will take David as her true and lawful husband. She is unable to say ‘I do’ and runs from the church confused, realizing that something is missing in her love for David. She gives back the engagement ring that David gave her.

What will Mary Ellen do? Who will she marry…if anyone at all?

We would always remember that day when our friends and neighbors gathered on the mountain at the site of the first Walton homestead. It somehow seemed fitting that the days leading up to Mary Ellen’s marriage had been filled with turmoil. All of us who knew and loved her had learned to expect the unexpected.

“Tonight we proudly welcome home Miss Ellen Corby as Grandma Walton.”

“A house alone has little meaning, it’s the people that live there who bring it to life and give it character. All during my grandmother’s absence our house, and everyone in it, seemed to long for her return. Grandpa never stopped hoping that she would come home, and finally there came a day when his prayers were to be answered”.

Grandpa is too excited to eat breakfast as he prepares to bring Esther home from the hospital. Mary Ellen explains that Grandma still cannot speak after her stroke. After Zeb leaves, the family prepares the house for Grandma’s return.

When Jason hears the truck’s horn blaring off in the distance he yells out, “Grandma is coming home!”

At the supper table Grandpa offers a prayer of rejoicing that he’s reunited with his wife. After supper, John joins his mother on the porch to remember his childhood with his brother Ben. John says, “There is nothing to be afraid of in silence. Just being near each other is what really counts.”

Later, after John, Zeb and Olivia have gone to town, Grandma answers the ringing telephone with Erin on the other end. When Erin hears nothing but mumbles she immediately calls Sheriff Bridges, asking him to find her parents.

Without anyone knowing, Jim Bob takes Grandma on a ride in the car he’s just fixed.

When John, Olivia, and Grandpa get Erin’s message and return home they cannot find Grandma. Jim Bob drives up with Grandma just as Elizabeth and Ben (covered with mud) arrive. John chides the children for not being responsible to care for their Grandma.
Esther unsuccessfully tries to explain that she is fine and enjoyed her ride in Jim Bob’s car.

As Olivia and Grandma snap green beans Esther tries to explain how she feels. Unable to understand Olivia finally hears, ‘Need me?’ and asks Esther, ‘You don’t think anybody needs you?’

Set in 1935 Waxahachie, Texas, Places in the Heart tells the story of one woman’s fight for her family, her home, and her future.

When Sheriff Royce Spalding is accidentally killed by a drunken gunman, his wife, Edna, is suddenly thrust into the role of provider for her two small children, Frank and Possum. Then “Mose,” an out-of-work black man begging for every meal in the racist South, happens along with a scheme to plant cotton on her forty acres. It is the only chance Edna has to keep her family together.

Meanwhile, Mr. Denby, from the bank that holds the mortgage on the farm, is quick to extend a “hand of charity” to Mrs. Spalding by depositing his blind brother-in-law, Mr. Will, with her for safekeeping. A tornado offers their first challenge. Emerging from the storm cellar, blind Mr. Will asks “How bad is it?” “Well,” Mose responds, “everything’s a little bent, but it’s still here.”

Next, the bottom falls out of the cotton market and Edna’s only chance to make the mortgage payment is that she be first to bring her crop to the cotton mill and claim the $100 first prize. But in order to get there, she’ll have to face the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, which objects to Mose’s efforts to best a white man to the prize money.

    A Waltons Family Easter

Olivia feels odd after church, her legs seem very weak. The family takes her directly home, and after a brief visit from the Baldwin sisters Olivia feels worse and takes to her bed.

Olivia’s situation worsens when she discovers that she can’t feel her legs, so they call for Dr. Vance, who is reluctant to tell her his diagnoses … infantile paralysis—polio.

When John finally tells the children, who are stunned, Erin takes the news the hardest and refuses to go in and see her mother in fear that she will be “different” in some way.

Hope springs anew when Olivia moves her feet during one of Mary Ellen’s dancing lessons and she proclaims she’ll be walking by Easter. However, when positive signs don’t continue, discouragement sets in.

As Easter grows closer her fruitless attempts to walk make her decide to use the wheelchair. John-Boy, however, is of the opinion she’s trying too hard. When Grandma says it is God’s will, John-Boy’s faith in God is put to the test and he runs to the mountain.

Mary Ellen’s baby is due soon and everyone on Walton’s Mountain is excited. The Baldwin sisters are planning a baby shower. Elizabeth is choosing a name. Ben and Ike have started a pool at the General Mercantile to see who’ll guess the baby’s due date.

Mary Ellen insists she’ll have the baby at home. John and Grandpa agree, against the better wisdom of Curt and Olivia, who believe she’d be better off at the hospital.

Later Mary Ellen is summoned into a brewing storm to deliver a baby for a young backwoods girl named Cassie. When Mary Ellen enters the cabin she finds Cassie’s baby stillborn.

A very superstitious Cassie simply will not believe that the baby was born too early to survive. Cassie warns Mary Ellen that looking on her dead baby is a bad omen; “Look upon the face of death, never feel your baby’s breath.”

Mary Ellen is unnerved and dashes out of the cabin into the stormy night. As she stumbles down the rain swept road she sees ball lightening dancing along a fence rail … another omen.

After one false labor, family excitement surrounding Jason’s job accompanying the “Vaudeville” show at the movie house, disgust over the baby pool Ben and Ike are running, and an intense labor … Mary Ellen finally delivers the next generation right there on Walton’s Mountain!

But this isn’t the end of the trouble for the Waltons. Olivia leaves Mary Ellen to hang the clothes while she goes in to check on John Curtis. When she enters the room where the baby sleeps, she finds the basinet empty and the curtains billow in the breeze of a wide open window.

Is Cassie’s omen yet to pass? Will they find John Curtis?

    Academy Award Winner Anthony Quinn

This epic masterpiece is the story of one man’s struggle to find his faith. Barabbas, a violent criminal accused of murder, is pardoned when Pontius Pilate induces the crowds to release him, rather than Jesus. For the rest of his life the guilt-ridden Barabbas tries to run from the Savior’s sacrifice, seeking to justify his existence and to determine his place in the scheme of things. Along the way he encounters the self-righteous pomposity of Pilate, the stoning of Sara, the gladiatorial brutality of Torvald, and the burning of Rome.

During his quest Barabbas descends into the brutal world of the gladiatorial arena, where he believes he’ll win his freedom. Here, amid the cruel and vicious reality of gladiatorial conquest, Barabbas confronts his guilt and discovers true freedom by following the man who was crucified in his place.

A life-changing encounter with the risen Jesus!

    Powerful. Gripping. Intelligent

The life of Jesus the Christ

This 1961 classic stars 50’s “teen idol” Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus, and features Oscar-nominee and Emmy winner Rip Torn as Judas, with Oscar nominee Robert Ryan as John the Baptist. This powerful and critically acclaimed story is directed by Oscar nominee Nicholas Ray (director of the 1955 James Dean classic, Rebel Without a Cause) and is told in a strikingly beautiful visual style, filmed in Super-Technirama Technicolor©.

    From the 1961 theatrical trailer:

More than any motion picture you have ever seen, King of Kings is a surpassing emotional experience; the gripping story of people whose lives and aspirations were strikingly similar to our own. This is the searching drama of a world torn by barbaric tyranny and violent human conflict. Out of the shadows of ruthless power and idolatry came Jesus of Nazareth, who feared none, not even death.

This is the story of Jesus, the Christ: His Power. His Passion. His Greatness.

It was a time of fear.

It was a time of love.

    It was the time of…

One simple act will change a man…forever

Les Misérables is a legendary tale of adventure, obsession, romance, freedom…and redemption amid the turbulence of early 19th century France.

Jean Valjean is released from prison, having served 20 years hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. But the brutality of his imprisonment has left him without conscience; a man who will lie, steal, cheat and survive off his wit and sheer brute strength…a man who expects nothing but cruelty from others.

Until one Bishop’s simple act of kindness…

Bishop: Now Don’t Forget, Don’t ever Forget, you’ve promised to become a new man.

Jean Valjean: Promise? Wha, Why are you doing this?

Bishop: Jean Valjean, my brother, you no longer belong to evil. With this silver I have bought your soul. I’ve ransomed you from fear and hatred, and now I give you back to God.

Valjean is left reeling, wrestling with his own conscience…and with the Bishop’s God.

Twenty years later, on the eve of revolution in France, Valjean has come to terms with forgiveness…but his past has yet to release him.

The relentless inspector Javert has been in an obsessive pursuit of Valjean since his release from prison.

Will Javert have his revenge? Have twenty years of forgiveness and reconciliation with God changed the reckless hatred Valjean had for everything the prison did to him?

Will forgiveness be enough this time?

    Life Changes In a Nanosecond…

“How do you describe both a beginning and an end, we should have known better, but we didn’t…what does it matter what we think we know, in the end there’s no denying the truth.”

    ~Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron)

In one chaotic moment millions of people around the world disappear.

Cities and communities are overwhelmed by chaos and mass confusion as cars, suddenly unmanned, careen out of control, fires erupt and people stare in stunned disbelief at piles of rumpled clothing that were once a friend or loved one.

Shock gives way to fear, unleashing a wave of hysteria. Some believe it’s an alien invasion, but Rayford Steele knows his wife’s warning was true – Jesus has come for His people and Rayford has been Left Behind.

Could this be the rapture so many radical Christians believed?

Could this be the first sign initiating God’s plan to bring the world to an end?

In a world without God’s people, the darkest days are yet to come…

A Triumphant Love Story from the Ashes of Adversity

Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams), Lana Wood (Diamonds are Forever), Eleese Lester (Friday Night Lights), Carman and newcomer Sherri Morris (as Ruth) star in this triumphant story of love rising from the ashes of adversity. Loyalty, compassion and faithfulness highlight a poignant retelling of the biblical story of Ruth. Recently widowed, Ruth returns with her mother-in-law Naomi to Israel, a land in turmoil, where they struggle to build a new life.

There, Ruth meets and marries Boaz, of the Royal House of Judah, a Kinsman Redeemer who provides for Ruth and Naomi and leads them to a deeper understanding of the purposes and plans revealed in the covenant keeping faithfulness and love of the living God of Israel. This Biblical “Cinderella story” is taken straight from the archives of the royal Jewish bloodline and reveals the grand purpose of redemption through their child Obed, established in the glorious lineage of his grandson, King David, whose throne will be established forever at the marvelous advent of Messiah.

Box-office sensation and Academy Award-winner Mel Gibson (Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ) stars in this romantic action adventure about courage, taking risks, seizing the moment–and getting one more chance.

In 1939, test pilot Daniel McCormick (MEL GIBSON) has the world by the tail, and he’s having the time of his life. He has the perfect job–flying B-25s for the newly formed Air Corps. He has a terrific best friend–loyal buddy and truly brilliant scientist, Harry Finley (GEORGE WENDT). And he has his true love at his side – his childhood sweetheart and beautiful soul-mate, Helen (ISABEL GLASSER). Life has given him everything he wanted.

    Almost.

Daniel can look danger in the face unflinchingly, but he has one problem: just thinking about emotions – much less declaring them – makes his throat close up without fail. The mere prospect of proposing marriage to Helen gets him weak-kneed. And every time he begins, Daniel decides he can wait until tomorrow to pop the question.

When tragedy suddenly strikes, Daniel’s tomorrows are snatched from him in one terrible instant. Now, he faces the very real possibility of life alone, knowing that he never truly declared his feelings for the woman he will always love.

Grief-stricken, Daniel volunteers for a top-secret cryogenics experiment conducted by his friend Harry – an experiment that accidentally puts him into frozen slumber for more than 50 years. He awakens in 1992, lost, alone and not knowing how to behave. Through a tender friendship with a fatherless young boy (ELIJAH WOOD) and the boy’s mother (JAMIE LEE CURTIS), Daniel finally learns that, while time waits for no man–true love waits forever.

Pain is inevitable. Misery is optional.

There, an unlikely relationship develops, as the angelic girl copes with the hard exterior of her newfound guardian. While a conniving agent and his long-time chauffer try their best to control his chaotic Hollywood lifestyle; his deceptive co-star Cassandra has other ideas.

Struggling to cope with his career, his crumbling marriage, and a crisis of faith, Michael seeks advice and refuge with his sister Annie. Her words and actions guide Michael through the tumultuous tumble his life has become.

And while Michael prepares for the most important event of his life, he must also make a choice that will change his life forever.

    Obedience is better than sacrifice

Abraham brings the Old Testament to life in this epic, moving tale of abiding faith. Richard Harris (“Unforgiven,” “Camelot”) and Barbara Hershey (“Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Portrait of a Lady”) star as Abraham and Sarah, the prosperous shepherd and his barren wife who, as told in the book of Genesis, heed a divine command to leave their home for the promise of future generations and dominion over a new homeland.

Time and again God tests Abraham during the difficult journey, forcing him to share Sarah’s pain at remaining childless, wage war against hostile tribes, and witness the destruction of Sodom. When Sarah bears Isaac, the child of her old age, Abraham is asked to demonstrate his trust in, and obedience to, the living God by presenting his only child as sacrifice.

    When life becomes reality

Sarah Collins (Rebecca St. James) is a young woman on the elevator of success, poised to attain her dream of an executive corner office. There’s only one thing that’s going to keep her from getting it, an unexpected pregnancy.

Sarah is now faced with a moral and potentially career ending choice.

She is torn between keeping the life growing inside her and her legal right to abort the baby. In the midst of her turmoil, a mysterious stranger foretells the coming of three visions that will challenge her heart.

With financial pressures mounting and her dream career at stake, what will Sarah choose?

Two men chasing dreams of glory!

Chariots of Fire, winner of four Academy Awards (including Best Picture), is based on the inspiring true story of two runners competing for Olympic glory in their own fashion – and for their own reasons.

Paris Olympics, 1924. Scotsman Eric Liddell is motivated by his Christian faith and competes for the glory of God. His teammate Harold Abrahams, a Jewish Englishman, is driven to prove that Jews are not inferior people. Fierce competitiveness and loyalty drive two men toward a goal only one of them will attain. United in the camaraderie of competition the two men discover the complexity of deeper motives…and how much they truly have in common.

    Immanuel, God is with us!

The Nativity follows Mary and Joseph on a quiet, authentic journey through doubt, pain, and confusion – into the mystery and wonder of that first Christmas miracle. This tender love story amid the drama of faith in crisis inspires a deeper trust in God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises.

The announcement of Mary’s miraculous pregnancy will test the young couple’s faith in each other – and in God. After deep personal struggle Joseph decides to break off their engagement quietly, until God reveals to him that this son will be called “…Jesus, for He will save his people from their sins.” With that, Joseph obediently devotes himself to Mary, and to supporting, protecting and raising this gift from God, wrapped in swaddling cloth and laid in a manger.

A different kind of Christmas story

The Children’s Carol tells of a time when all the sounds and events of the world speak against the holiday. London is being bombed, the evil of Nazi rule is spreading across Europe, and the war seems very close to Walton’s Mountain.

This is the year two young English orphans seek refuge on the mountain; and the year Olivia Walton’s faith is tested by the horrors of oncoming war and events in her community. This is a Christmas story of courage, faith, and the victory of the human spirit over the shattering impact of war. After this Christmas, the world will never again be the same.

What if the world threw you a birthday party and you weren’t invited?

Starring Jefferson Moore, Christina Fougnie and Matt Wallace.

A spoiled schoolgirl (Christina Fougnie), her overworked executive mother (Amy Hess) and a disillusioned young minister (Matt Wallace) each receives an uplifting message about friendship, commitment, and the truest meaning of Christmas from a kind, but mysterious drifter named Jess.

In a world that seems to have forgotten the true meaning, this charming film invites you and your family to rediscover Christmas this year.

The power of family love in times of crisis.

An Avonlea Christmas pays tribute to Hetty King, the indomitable and sometimes intolerable King family matriarch, and chronicles the family’s efforts to stay together and support one another through difficult times.

Against the backdrop of World War I the King family prepares for their traditional Christmas dinner. The reunion is marred by the fact that one of its youngest members, Felix, is missing in action; making differences of opinion about the war effort glaringly obvious.

During an attempt to persuade a famous performer and former student to perform in the Avonlea Christmas Musicale, Hetty injures her back and must undergo life-threatening surgery. While hospitalized, homesick and alone, she begins to re-evaluate her relationships and her accomplishments in life.

Addressing serious issues while remaining true to the spirit of Christmas, this wonderful and accomplished cast comes together in an uplifting drama that illustrates the frailty of life and the strength of family in turbulent times.

Family is still life’s greatest treasure

A Wind at My Back Christmas reunites many of the original cast as the Sutton and Bailey families are growing up and returning home for the holidays. As Christmas draws near even New Bedford is not immune from the looming prejudices in Europe; wartime tensions find their way into the heart of the small town and threaten to divide the Bailey and Sutton families.

Grace and May have gone to Europe to recover Van’s belongings and may not return to Canada in time for the holiday traditions. Toppy is in a tizzy because she is directing the town Christmas pageant but Jim Flett has written a flop.

Hub, planning to become a priest, comes home for Christmas and brings a surprise – a girl named Anna Schiller. Maisy, who harbors a secret crush on Hub, is devastated.

When Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Wells comes to town looking for Anna it throws the Bailey and Sutton families into turmoil. It’s a story that weaves together real fears, human compassion, respect, and faith that family is still life’s greatest treasure.

Secret of Giving, starring Country Music superstar Reba McEntire, is the touching story of Rose Cameron, a woman whose grit and spirit — and the aid of a mysterious lone rider — enables her not only to pick her self up, but to restore the faith of a whole town in time for Christmas.

It’s the early 1900s and Rose Cameron (Reba McEntire) is a young widow with an overdue mortgage, only a few cattle to sell, and her 5-year-old son, Toby (Devon Alan), running a fever that seems to rise by the hour. Rose seems at the end of her rope when Harry Withers (Thomas Ian Griffith), a lone rider, shows up on her farm.

Things go from bad to worse when Rose can’t convince the banker, Gotch (Ronny Cox), to forestall foreclosure proceedings on her farm. Harry steps up to help, igniting a spark between he and Rose. But when an old acquaintance from back when recognizes him and threatens to reveal his true identity, Harry strikes a deal with Gotch that may put his own future in jeopardy, but will brighten the holiday season for much of the town.

Mark Twain’s timeless classic of envy and discovery

Tom Canty is born in the London slums on the same day Edward Tudor is born in the ranks of royals, destined to be the King of England.

Tom has a difficult time remembering his last meal and lives to avoid confrontation with his father, yet dreams of life steeped in riches and creature comforts.

Edward, beloved son of the often-merciless King Henry VIII, dreams of playing with children his own age and to “clothe myself in rags and revel in mud, with no one to forbid it.”

    The Big Valley–An INSP Exclusive

Though wealthy and prestigious, the Barkleys use their power to help the less fortunate homesteaders who struggle to make ends meet and make a way on a piece of the new land.

This series is set in 1870s California, in the gorgeous San Joaquin Valley and chronicles Stockton’s richest and most powerful family, The Barkleys.

Victoria Barkley is the family matriarch, a strong-willed widow leading an adult brood in the management of the Barkley Ranch, which includes cattle, mines, citrus groves, and logging camps. Victoria’s close-knit family brood consists of four adult children: two sons Jarrod and Nick, daughter Audra, and step-son Heath.

Jarrod, a prominent lawyer, handles all of the family’s legal issues and manages his two law offices in Stockton and San Francisco. Nick, a strong, sturdy rancher, oversees the hands-on, day-to-day operations of the family’s holdings. Nick is aggressive, out-spoken, and at times hot-headed. Victoria’s youngest child is her beautiful daughter Audra. Audra is protected by all of the family members. Audra is very sensitive, caring, loves horses, and is a very talented rider.

Heath, Victoria’s step-son, helps Nick manage the family’s possessions. Heath tends to be quiet and reserved, yet sincere – standing up for what he believes in and proudly wearing the Barkley name.

The Barkley family members bond together like glue when troubles arise, and successfully face the challenges of land disputes, squatters, bank robbers, horse thieves, kidnapping, injuries, and illness. They share strong family values, joy, laughter, and the pain of heartache as they deal with life’s problems.

The road to Paradise is a journey of the heart

Starring Crystal Bernard and Brian Dennehy

In this inspirational family story a preacher named Debbie Laramie and her son, Hayden are sent from a big city “mega” church to Paradise, a small rural community that is in desperate need of direction.

The fact that the preacher is named Debbie only complicates things. Seeing that the town is stuck in complacency and turns its back on its neediest neighbors Debbie begins building a new vision for her congregation…

… A vision that embraces everyone, even the poor and outcast, and when Debbie invites Trevor Goodman, an elderly black man living on the streets, to sing at the church service she realizes the deep rooted veil of indifference may be too strong to lift.

But as the church begins to embrace Debbie’s methods, the congregation begins to find their own sense of inspiration, tolerance and consideration … then something happens that might cause the church’s charter to be revoked.

    A REEL Inspiration Special Presentation

Screenplay: Rod Peterson & Claire Whitaker
    Director: Ralph Senensky

    Powerful. Gripping.

However, a scuffle with a loan shark sends Nick and Clancy on the run to the nearby countryside. There, an unlikely relationship develops, as the angelic girl copes with the hard exterior of her newfound guardian. Meanwhile, the mayor’s ambitions heighten, as the prospects materialize for a statewide ‘manhunt’ and a military-style rescue operation that will play out as the TV news cameras roll.

Max and Honey have differences of opinion over the older boys; Fat wants to quit school and join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
