A legitimate war hero who earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, among other commendations, James Arness put his real-life leadership experience into the characters he played. This month we pay tribute to the larger than life actor who commands the TV screen in roles such as US Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke and as Zebulon Macahan in How the West Was Won.

Word of Honor

Guest Star Claude Akins. A rancher’s son is kidnapped, shot and held for ransom by a gang. Doc arrives, but the son dies. The gang lets Doc go, but force him to give his word of honor that he will not reveal their identities.

Home Surgery

When Matt and Chester return to Dodge City, they are met by Holly Hawtree, whose father is very ill with gangrene. The only way he can survive is to have his leg amputated. Matt steps in and must perform the surgery.

Obie Tater

Old prospector, Obie Tater, arrives in Dodge City. He soon causes trouble for himself, Matt and his new bride when he refuses to tell where his fortune of gold is hidden. A group of outlaws try to force him to give up his gold.

Night Incident

Matt Dillon is reluctant to believe little Timmy Wyatt’s stories of nighttime crimes that he has witnessed, since Timmy is known for telling tall tales. But, Matt agrees to investigate and discovers the surprising truth.

Smoking Out the Nolans

Rancher Clay Young asks Matt Dillon to evict Mr. and Mrs. Nolan from a home on his land. However, the couple insists that they bought the land legally from Young and refuse to vacate the property.

Kite’s Reward

Matt Dillon takes away Andy Travis’s gun after he shoots and kills a man in self-defense. Matt thinks that no one will challenge an unarmed man to a gunfight, but little does he know Andy has a bounty on his head.

The Hunter

Guest Star Peter Whitney. Matt Dillon searches for legendary buffalo hunter, Jase Murdock, who is trespassing on sacred Indian hunting grounds. Murdock’s defiance to cross their land and massacre buffalo could spark an uprising.

The Queue

Guest Star Sebastian Cabot. Two bullies try to force a Chinese man, named Chen, out of Dodge City by cutting off his pigtail. Chen tells Matt Dillon the only way he can return to China is with the pigtail, or kill the men who stole it
