#2 The Bequest
A letter arrives: Grandma’s old friend has died, leaving her $250 dollars. She gives some money to repair the church roof, some to each grandchild, and the rest to John-Boy’s education. Excited, the family spends some savings on a new water heater and Grandpa’s watch repair. A second letter arrives: debt has taken the money. Grandma shuts herself in her room, ashamed she can’t keep her promises.
