GET TO KNOW TONY

What drew you to your chosen craft?

As a small child I was interested in pocket knives. In my early 20s, I was fooling around fixing some old ones and decided I would try making one. That was 44 yrs ago, and I still haven’t made one I’m completely happy with. The passion for it is what keeps me going.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I enjoy most making a useful tool that works really well

Why is it important for people to make things with their own hands?

Most people that make handmade things do it for the passion. They are trying to make a better thing than you can go to the store and buy.

In what ways are handmade goods better than those that are mass-produced?

Because they get individual attention. They are made of better materials, the fit and finish is much better. As time passes a craftsman learns better ways to do something and learns to pay more attention to detail.  The end result is a much better product than you can buy at a box store.

What does the future hold for your type of work?

Traditional knives have been made for more than 2 centuries. They are useful tools. A lot of them are made for a specific purpose.  When I came on the national scene about 1990 there was only 4 other guys making them, now there are many.  I think there will always be a market for them.  And there are people who want the best and are willing to pay for it.
