In this modern rendition of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, a free-spirited Sir Lancelot (Richard Gere) threatens to supersede the aging King Arthur (Sean Connery) by winning the love of his fiancé, Guinevere (Julia Ormond). Guinevere, on her way to marry King Arthur, is ambushed by the evil Sir Malagant, but fortunately for her, Lancelot is close by and rescues the soon-to-be future queen.

Although Sir Lancelot and Guinevere fall in love, she still wants to wear the crown and pursues the marriage of King Arthur. Sir Lancelot refuses to relinquish his love and power, while Guinevere is torn between the love of Sir Lancelot and the loyalty of the aging King.
